This is a troubling article, cynical and bitter in and of itself. But does it really get at one of the problems facing the unions in the EMI sector? I think it might. I recently spent a fair amount of time working with UAW activists on the recent contract negotiations with the Big 3 auto companies. And those good folks can very likely explain a lot of the decline in the power of their union as linked to the psychological impact of technological change and globalization. Those forces are hitting the EMI sector, too, and if this heavily unionized environment is to respond and thrive it will need to find a road forward that, like Obama claims he does, brings hope to the membership.
