Egypt is not a vacuum: Background on the Egyptian labor movement

Egypt like many authoritarian regimes has an official state controlled Egyptian Trade Union Federation. (For more on labor and authoritarian regimes, see my new book “From Che to China: Labor and Authoritarianism in the New Global Economy.”)

The international labor movement denies the ETUF official recognition. But in the last few years a new independent union movement has emerged. This link contains good background information on the fledging movement, which is said to be playing an important role in the current uprising for democracy in the country.

This is proof that the uprising is not creating a vacuum in Egyptian politics which is now the basis of the joint line of conservatives and beltway liberals like Obama and National Review. There is organization in the uprising and it should be encouraged.
