Vallywood!

UnknownI started VallyWood! back in 2006 after my discussions with the Screen Actors Guild about becoming their CEO (now called the NED, for “National Executive Director”). While negotiations broke down¬†and I withdrew my name from consideration for the gig, I spent a good deal of time with the leadership of the union and met many very fine committed union activists in the process.

I continued conversations with several SAG activists as they navigated through a very tough bargaining round with the Hollywood studios, a dramatic change in leadership, and, finally, a merger with their longtime sister guild, AFTRA. I learned a great deal about the dramatic changes underway in the industry and their implications for the unions that remain at the heart of that world.

The core insight of the blog was the fact that developments here in Silicon Valley are as important for the future of the media and entertainment world as anything that happens in Hollywood or New York. You can find my posts on this topic by clicking here. With SAG-AFTRA elections and a new bargaining round coming up in the near future it is time to pay attention to these issues more closely. The pace of technological change here in the Valley continues to be a serious challenge for the union and the industry as a whole
